Notre-Dame de Lourdes Sanctuaries
The sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes has constituted the biggest centre for French Catholic pilgrimage since Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary declaring to be the Immaculate Conception, four years after Pope Pie IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, this was Our Lady of Lourdes. The appearances in Lourdes started on 11 February 1858 in the small grotto of Massabielle, not far from the village, along the Gave de Pau river and would last for several months. Bernadette experienced the Virgin Mary eighteen times in total. After looking into them, the bishop of Tarbes, Bertrand-Sévère Laurence, recognised the appearances on 18 January 1862 in the name of the Catholic Church.

Discovery in Lourdes
Famous for its sanctuaries and its 18 appearances of the Virgin Mary, Lourdes is one of the centres for pilgrimage. But the city also has many wonderful museums and other cultural places. In particular, you’ll visit the Wax Museum right in the centre, which relates the great period of Christianity, the life of Jesus and that of Saint Bernadette.

At the Petit Lourdes Museum, Lourdes is entirely recreated in miniature. Georges Simonin, the man who created it, devoted 25 years to creating his hyper realistic work.

Wandering through the small streets, you’ll stop at the Moulin Boly where Bernadette Soubirous lived, in solitary confinement, at the hospice or the Neo-Roman Parish Church, and climb as far as the high-up fortified castle listed as a Historic Monument. Up there, Lourdes, the sanctuaries, mountains and valleys stretch out as far as the eye can see.
